Parna Basu is a leading practitioner of the Kalka-Bindadin Lucknow Gharana of Kathak, a classical North Indian dance tradition. She is a prime disciple of the legendary Pt. Birju Maharaj, training under him for over a decade. An accomplished artist, Parna was the recipient of the National Scholarship of Culture (Ministry of Culture) and a “Grade A” artist for Doordarshan (National Television of India) since 2001. She has performed all over the world, both as a soloist and as part of Pt. Birju Maharaj’s select ensemble. After moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in the early 2000s, Parna established the Nritta Katha school of Kathak Dance. She endeavors to inspire her students to develop a graceful physical presence based on core strength, build numerical cognition to seek joy in the delightful patterns all around us, and find their path to self-actualization through a classical art form. After moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2003, I faced the exciting prospect of establishing my identity as an artist and a teacher of the Lucknow Gharana. It was an incredibly rewarding time to integrate into the rich arts environment in the SF Bay Area. I performed as a featured soloist in the 2006 and 2007 editions of the Ethnic Dance Festival at the Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco, the Presidio, and the Mexican Heritage Plaza, San Jose. Kanha School of Dance is a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching and performing Bharata Nrityam- an ancient Indian classical dance form. It was established in 2011 in San Jose, CA. It was founded by Ashwini Srivatsan, the artistic director of the company. The company strives to bring the eastern tradition of Bharata Nrityam to the west. Dance, music and culture are an integral part of building a community that one can feel a strong connection with and this is Kanha's mission. I am a Bharatanatyam dancer, teacher, and choreographer from India based in San Francisco for the past 4 years. I have been teaching kids this art form for over 9 years in India. My technical training of this art form was strengthened after having done my bachelor's degree from Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya. I believe dance cannot be learnt just by itself, so it is important for the kids to understand these various - Body strengthening - Prayers - Story-telling from Mythology and how it can be exhibited in dance - Talam It is a constant learning for me as a teacher as well. As much as a student gains from a class the teacher has learnt something new as well. It is a way of giving back to the cultural society from which I have gained so much. I am currently also training under Guru Shri Vaibhav Arekar from India and travel with his dance company across the globe and currently working as a freelancer with Nava Dance Theatre in San Francisco. The Prayukti Dance School is an initiative started by Nitya to share her art, training and values. It also serves as a way to promote and retain art and culture in the Bay Area. Nitya currently has her dance school - Prayukti in the California Bay Area where she practices and teaches. She also works as the Programming Director of the Raadha Kalpa Dance Company and handles all of the company’s foreign tours and programs. In her formative years, she trained under Guru Suma Mani, Chennai and trained in the Vazhoor style of bharatanatyam. A graceful, enthusiastic and passionate dancer, Nitya completed her arangetram (debut, solo performance) in the year 2003 under Smt Suma following which she did many group and solo performances in Chennai’s esteemed platforms like Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Narada Ghana Sabha, Kamaraj Hall, RR Sabha to name a few. Nitya’s interest and passion for movement and dance led her to pursue the Post Diploma program in Movement Arts and Media from the Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts, where she graduated with honors. In this course, she was exposed to various kinds of movement vocabulary like Contemporary Dance, Kalaripayattu, Chaau and Ballet. She also gained an understanding of many other subjects that support dance and performance like Stage and Lighting, Pedagogy and Approach to Choreography through the course of this program. Nitya has also done a few short courses/workshops in theatre and acting under some eminent names like Anmol Vellani, Prakash Belawadi and Ronlin Foreman.
