Kathak is one of the major forms of classical dance of India with its origins in Northern India. The name Kathak is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘katha' which means ‘story' and the one who tells the stories is called ‘Kathak'. Kathak is found in three Gharanas-Jaipur, Banaras, and Lucknow Gharana from the cities where the Kathak dance tradition evolved. These classes at TSK will focus on the Banaras and Lucknow Gharanas.

The Massachussets chapter of HindiUSA is located in Needham, MA. Classes are conducted every Friday, 7-8pm. For more details and registration, please visit hindiusa.org or call Vikram Kaul at 203-919-1394. Books and materials are included in the annual fee of $260. HindiUSA was formed as a non-profit volunteer organization in 2001 by a few people who wanted to promote Hindi language at the grass root level. They felt that the Indian culture, its sacraments and traditions are very much tied with Hindi and by promoting Hindi the Indian ‘essence’ will live on in the younger generation. Something which is unique and has no counterpart is not easily translatable and hence will remain viable. Hindi is the second most spoken language in the world and the rich grammar, vocabulary and wide aesthetic appeal that it has in people motivates HindiUSA volunteers to help preserve it. To do this, we have well defined syllabus and practical ways to implement it. The syllabus and teaching methodologies are reviewed periodically to provide optimum benefits to the students. Hindi can also bring India and USA much closer. Americans can easily learn about Indian cultural heritage through Hindi in their schools and by interacting with their Indian friends. In a short span of 15 years, HindiUSA grew from 2 students to over 4,000 and from 1 teacher to now over 350. HindiUSA never strives to win prizes or recognition. Its biggest prize is more than 500 graduates, many of whom are acting as assistant teachers and the largest Hindi family in USA.

The early stages of training involve learning the basic steps and movements of the dance. These are the building blocks for subsequent, more advanced, sequences for dancing. The exercises condition the body for the unique postures of Bharatanatyam. They also develop the student’s sense of movement. Having a fit and flexible physique allows a student to learn quickly. For those who are not fit and posses less flexibility they will have to be developed over time. Students also learn eye movements, which are done in integration with the body movements in the dance. At this stage students also learn the names of hand gestures, which is an important feature of Bharatanatyam. They compromise the descriptive language of the dance. They also teach the students about the history of Bharatanatyam and other topics related to it.
