How To Select The Right Beagle
Beagles, popular small hounds that were bred to hunt rabbits and hares in England are of various types; you have show beagles, hunting beagles and pet beagles, in addition to puppy and adults beagles and male and female beagles. Be wise to select the right beagle breeder of the kind you want.
A show beagle needs extensive training and has to adhere to the specific breeding standards as established by the American Kennel Association. Being high quality bloodlines, show beagles are quite expensive.
You should select a hunting or field beagle if you are fond of hunting; these beagles are great companions for an avid hunter as they have a great sense of smell and follow their noses more than other beagles. A hunting beagle is more vocal and has a different look than other beagles.
An affordable beagle is a pet beagle; this beagle has neither to perform any job, nor has to adhere to any kind of standards. It is easier to find the right pet beagle, provided you find a reputable breeder.
You also have the option to select a beagle puppy or an adult beagle. Adopting a beagle puppy means that someone should always be present in the house the first couple of months. This is to ensure proper home training, proper feeding, to ensure everything is safe during the teething process and to ensure a clean environment. Also adopting a beagle puppy also means that you would have to periodically wake up during the night and give the pup a lot of attention and time.

Picking the right beagle pup means selecting one that gets along well with its siblings and one that does not bite inadvertently, is energetic and of good temperament. Ensure that the beagle pup’s eyes are clear, hearing is clear and he moves well. Make sure there is no smell of yeast under the beagle’s ear; avoid adopting pups that have noticeable scratches and scabs on their coats.
Most adult beagles come from either shelters or rescue agencies; coming from homes of neglect, or owners who could no longer take care of them or abandoned due to natural catastrophe these dogs could present certain challenges. Never take home a beagle that bites or is aggressive or shy; most beagles are very inquisitive and a shy one could bite out of fear.
Both male and female beagles have excellent temperament. Selecting a female beagle means getting it sprayed right away if you plan on no breeding; spraying not only means avoiding unnecessary pregnancies, but also a prevention against breast cancer. Male beagles portray the “no shame” characteristic and lick their genital and mark everywhere to establish their dominance. Both females and males hump everything in sight, with females humping to show dominance.
All these points would guide you regarding the selection of the right beagle.
