Dogs are great companions and give unconditional love to their owners; but dogs are not the perfect fit for all families. So it is best to consider various aspects before adopting a dog, to avoid the dog being sent to an animal shelters.

Considerations before adopting a dog:

1. The first consideration is whether you would be able to spend quality time with the pet dog for training and companionship; it may not be possible if you work long hours or travel a lot. A good dog walking service or doggy day care cannot compensate for the quality time spent with your pet.

2. Think well about your expectations from your new pet; whether you want a lap dog, a workout companion or one between. These considerations would help in making the right choice.

3. The next important consideration is the non-negotiable issues regarding the pet dog. This includes considerations like if you would or wouldn’t mind a breed that barks a lot, one that sheds your dog on the sofa, bed or other furniture. These benchmarks would enable you to select a pet dog; it is best to work with shelters as where foster parents could answer questions regarding the dog.

4. Next it is important to find a breed that is the best fit for you and your  family; though researching on the net has helped many, but it is however best to go through breed rescues and breed meet up groups who would be able to tell you the best and worse points of each breed. This would prepare you before adopting a particular breed.

5. If you have never been a dog owner, you may hesitate on the adoption; you could overcome this hesitation by acting as a foster parent of a dog before making a permanent commitment. Other options available are that you could pet sit in your home or at friends; shelters and volunteer in rescues. This would help you decide if the pet dog of a particular breed is right for you.

6. Adopting a dog means a long term commitment of at least 12 to 15 years; you would have to consider future life changes like marriage, kids, moves and career changes. If you think you cannot commit yourself for the length of time, consider adopting an older dog or wait until you have a better perspective about your life.

Pups need a calm home

7. Do consider the right time to add a dog to your house; most young pets need a calm atmosphere when they go to a new home. Puppies already find it stressful being away from their mothers.

8. The last, but most important consideration is whether you can afford a pet dog; dogs need a crate or carrier, collar and leash, bedding, food bowls, toys and other items. There are also other costs like vet visits, expenses on dog training, grooming and other ongoing supplies.
