Linda A. Pearce began Elderhaus as an Adult Day Care to provide assistance to area caregivers. Understanding the difficulty of caring for aging loved ones, Pearce resolved to offer an opportunity for New Hanover County families seeking an alternative to nursing home placement. In 1981 Elderhaus took up residence inside the St. James Episcopal Church and accepted their first participants- 3 residents attending 2 days a week. In the years that followed Elderhaus would undergo several developments including expansion, relocation and changes in administration. In addition to serving as an Adult Day Care, in 2008 Elderhaus opened North Carolina s first PACE center. PACE services transformed elder care, providing All-Inclusive medical care in addition to socialization and quality of life.
