In 1972, Dr. Francis J. Curry, Director of the San Francisco Department of Public Health, opened a primary care clinic (North of Market Health Clinic) in San Francisco s Tenderloin district to help address the problem of isolation and premature mortality among the neighborhood s elderly. The medical clinic was established with trained medical staff, and house calls were made to ensure that these seniors were receiving proper care. Realizing that proper medical care was only one component contributing to overall health and wellness, Dr. Curry created the partnership that is now Curry Senior Center, to provide social services. Since opening its doors 35 years ago, Curry Senior Center has treated and cared for thousands of elderly people in San Francisco.
