NataRaji Arts offers Veena and yoga classes (in-person and virtual) for beginners and intermediate practitioners (Kids 6+ years of age and adults) in San Jose, Bay Area. Veena is an ancient Indian String Instrument. It is the divine instrument played by Goddess Saraswati (Goddess of Knowledge, Music and Wisdom). Rajalakshmi Roshan, Artistic Director of NataRaji Arts, started learning Veena at the age of 11 under the tutelage of Adi Chitra Alankara One foot Veena Vidwan - Shri. Rangarajan Soundarajan and completed her arangetram in 2005 at Karneshwar temple in Chennai, India. She won second place at the All India Radio Instrumental (Veena) Competition in 2007 and has given several performances all around Chennai. Born and raised in Chennai, Raji was surrounded with dance and music that instilled fondness for performing arts. She values her rich cultural heritage and wishes to spread the beauty of the melodious divine instrument - Veena to diverse cultural background and promote next generation of artists by providing creative and encouraging learning platform for aspiring students. Apart from being a passionate Vainika and a trained Indian Classical Dancer, Rajalakshmi has been a yoga practitioner since the age of 8. She is a certified yoga instructor and offers yoga classes focused on improving flexibility, building strength and developing a mindful practice in the busy modern world.

Subhashini with her mother Shyamala’s guidance began her vocal training at the age of five. She was fine tuned by Guru Vidwan Ramachandra Rao. Concurrently, her Veena training began under the guidance of her Grand Father, Vidwan Gopinatha Das (founder of PAMPA) and continued with Smt. Usha Shastry. Subhashini gave her first stage performance at the age of seven for the Japanese International Music festival in India. As a child, she accompanied renowned artists such as Dr. Balamurali Krishna in his well-known musical album ‘Narasimha Suprabhatha,’ composed by Vidwan Gopinatha Das. She also had a great opportunity of composing and performing a song for a popular Hollywood music producer Christopher Franke. Subhashini has collaborated and created fusion music with a flavor of Karnatic, Jazz and Blues in collaboration with renowned Sitarist Ashwin Batish and also performed with Super stars Shankar Mahadevan and Vijay Prakash. Subhashini started the Bay Area center for Shankar Mahadevan Academy in 2015. Subhashini is a well versed ‘artist’ in the field of Carnatic classical vocal music, string instrument Veena. Additionally the academy offers training for music certification program that will get you certified and earn academic college credits. It starts with understanding of basic music concepts (pitch, rhythm, speed etc), and then blends in piano playing which includes understanding of the instrument, finger numbering, correct positioning, key recogntion, ear training and note reading. These lessons are designed keeping in mind the age group (which means these kids generally have a short attention span, need to have fun while learning and require repitition to remember concepts etc.). The class sparks up the child's imagination using story telling and a variety of tools to keep them engaged in learning and building finger dexterity.
