BHMS is a not-for-profit, independent school which was established in 1983, employs 45 staff and over 200 students. The School receives some provincial funding for general operations for our daycare licensed programming and subsidized daycare from the City of Ottawa. BHMS is one of only two CCMA accredited Montessori schools in the Ottawa area. Bishop Hamilton Montessori School was founded in January 1983 with six preschool students. The school fell under the jurisdiction of the Ottawa Anglican School Society. The Society was incorporated on October 7, 1981 by Anglicans concerned about the adequacy of Christian nurturing for students. The School is named after the first Anglican bishop of Ottawa, the Right Reverend Charles Hamilton. Among his other qualities, Bishop Hamilton is remembered for his happy relationship with children.
