Tabla Lessons from a Grammy Nominated teacher, John Churchville, who has studied with Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri and Pandit Samar Saha. John has a BFA in World Music Performance from California Institute of the Arts (2001) and his Masters in Music Education from the University of Michigan. Students that study with John also gain exclusive yearly access to lessons from Pandit Samar Saha, student recitals and other performance opportunities. John is also the founder of Sumkali, and Indian Fusion group from Ann Arbor. Students of John's will learn how to play from the Beneres gharana, as well as adapting to fusion music.

Mike List is a globalized percussionist based out of Metro Detroit playing both western and non-western instruments from around the globe. Mike has performed in a variety of musical settings including rock, jazz, classical, contemporary art music, and world music fusion ensembles. He currently works with the percussion group Rela, world jazz group Inscribe and is a regular performer with Rick Robinson's CutTime Simfonica and the Classical Revolution Detroit series. Mike holds a Master of Music and Bachelor of Music in percussion performance from Central Michigan University and has also studied tabla, mbira, and Arabic percussion. Along with performing, Mike teaches privately, accompanies modern dance, and teaches courses on the History of Rock and Roll and World Music.

Our instructor will guide you through every step of your learning journey, helping you develop your skills and become a proficient tabla player. Pavan Kanekal was raised in California and started learning tabla at the age of 7 from Pt. Rajgopal Kallurkar during a trip to Bangalore. Upon his return, Pavan continued to learn from Shri Abhinay Padhye and Shri Satish Tare in the San Francisco Bay Area for several years. He has attended workshops with accomplished tabla players such as Pt. Anindo Chatterjee, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Shri Anubrata Chatterjee, and more. More recently In 2021, Pavan moved to the Detroit Metro Area. He has continued his passion for tabla by offering classes to students of all ages, while keeping up with his own lessons remotely. Our classes are open to students of all ages and experience levels, and are taught by a seasoned instructor once a week. These classes are held in person and are conducted in a group setting, providing an opportunity for students to learn and grow together. We also offer a one on one orientation class for first time students at a reduced price. Our instructor is highly skilled in the art of classical tabla and has a passion for sharing their knowledge with others. They will guide students through a structured curriculum designed to help them progress at their own pace, while also encouraging creativity and individuality.

I am a distinguished Musical Instrument and vocal teacher with over 40 years experience located near Birmingham, in Royal Oak, MI. I specialize in Hindustani vocal, violin, sarangi and tabla lessons as well as Suzuki Method Music Lessons on violin, piano, guitar, and ukulele. I teach age 4 - adult. The teaching is open to students at all levels, beginners through advanced, amateurs and professionals. This approach, with its emphasis on perfect intonation, profound musical feeling, and the historically spiritual orientation of the Kirana style, can be of great benefit to those who want to improve their musicianship, as well as those who want to pursue this particular branch of musical knowledge. Rose is a disciple of Pandit Pran Nath and Ustad Hafizullah Khan. Founding Director of Kirana West, Portland Oregon, Rose is available for raga and tala lessons on the sarangi, vocal and tabla. She also teaches violin (including fiddle style and improvising) as well as guitar and ukulele (classical and folk). Through the Suzuki Method of Talent Education, my goal is to train students to reach the highest degree of musicianship, sensitivity and awareness, which can be applied to all areas of life. I use improvisation as well as the classical music literature to unfold the musical creativity that is inherent in everyone. I work with the student to develop self motivation and the discipline of progressive musical improvement. This encourages self confidence and the joy of sharing music.
