My friend who is in New York appreciated my blogs on pets and suggested I write about fishes as pets; she had a small fish aquarium and felt that fishes were the most ideal pet especially for those that had small children. It helped teaching children the responsibility of caring for pets.

Fishes were owned next to dogs and cats and require less of one’s time and attention; I believe she was right as a study by PFMA shows there are there 12 million pet fish living indoors and another 18 million currently living in garden ponds in USA.

Reasons why fishes make good pets:

Nothing can beat the tranquil and calming effect that fishes have on us as they glide along serenely in the water; you could experience the soothing effect even when you do not interact with them that not only helps lower your stress level, but also helps to divert your mind at least temporarily from the bills lying at your desk.

Next you do not have to worry about barking, mewing, squawking and screaming at the most inopportune moments as in the case of animals like dogs and cats and birds like conures or cockatiels; fishes are quiet and would not disturb neighbors or a sleeping baby.

It is easier and cost-effective to care for fishes as compared to dogs, cats and birds that require quality food, regular check-ups and visits to the vet that could cost substantially; fishes do not require visits to the vet. It is easy and cheap to pick up a jar of fishy flakes that could last for a long time. However fishes require a proper environment and knowledgeable caretakers.

Fishes come in infinite sizes, shapes and stunning and vibrant colors; they are low maintenance pets that could give you hours of beautiful and fascinating watching, but they neither demand much of your time and attention like dogs, cats, hamsters, ferrets and pet birds nor do they develop separation anxiety or destructive behavior when left all alone at home.

Facinating aquarium

Thanks to the pampering for our pet animals and birds; they require a lot of space to keep their food, toys, beds and cages. Sometimes a big apartment also seems small for them. All that fish need is a bowl/tank/aquarium with some food and lots of water. You have to neither worry about the fish going piddle in the corner nor worry about dirt or mud coming indoors; also fishes do not shed, slobber or drool.

You need not walk, groom or brush the teeth of fishes; on the contrary a well maintained fish aquarium could be a beautiful addition to any room of the house. Neither do fish leave a surprise for you on your brand new carpet nor the Afghan you received as a gift for Diwali.

Last but most important fishes make good pets as they interact with their owners by their playfulness and can even be trained to do tricks.

Do you have fishes? It’s time to invest in a fish aquarium.
