It was just the other day that visited my uncle and aunt whose grown-up children were abroad; I found them much happier than before. They had just adopted a poodle and told me how happy, wanted and fulfilled they felt after this adoption.

Some reasons why elders should have pets:

a) Dogs are the ideal pets for lonely elders because they not only provide companionship, but are also available at all times for them. It is best to adopt small dogs as they could easily travel with you wherever you go.

b) Most old and lonely people find it very difficult to get up and exercise; adopting a dog and making walking a part of your daily schedule would help give you exercise and good health.

c) Adopting a pet helps to give purpose and structure to the life of an elder; having the responsibility of caring for a dog would give you a good reason to get out of bed.

d) Adopting a pet dog helps to not only overcome loneliness, but also helps to get over stress; this could probably be attributed to the regular walks, having a friend at home and the wagging of the tail of the dog as you wake up.

e) My uncle told me that his poodle was the best thing he did to stay connected with life; his regular outdoor activity, visit to the vet, the grooming and washing of his dog also helped him to be involved in social activities.

f) Adopting a pet was a great way to be exposed to new activities and interests like cleaning of the neighborhood park where you walk your dog or even volunteering to take your pet to hospitals to spend some time with patients. Volunteering in hospitals would be a great way to feel fulfilled and happy.

g) Adopting a pet dog is a great way to make friends by taking part in shared activities for pet owners like communal walk, charitable events and projects run by organizations to cater to animals and pets; pet dogs are the true icebreakers.

h) Adopting a pet dog ensures security from potential thieves that fear barking dogs; your watchdog could just weigh 10 pounds, but the other person is not aware of it.

i) Your pet dog and the elder share a Win-Win relationship; he needs you as much as you need him and it is very satisfying and fulfilling having another living thing to care for.

j) Lastly adopting a dog means a commitment on the part of the elder; this could be one of the most positive decisions.
