What is a high chair? Should I get one for my kid?
A question asked by most parents is whether they should get high chairs for their child; my answer would be in the affirmative. High chairs that are comfortable and secure with harnesses at the proper position and height make feeding easy for parents. Most babies that sit properly and are able to take a full meal can start using the high chair; high chairs with reclining seats proving very useful to wean babies.
Yes, it is necessary to get a high chair for your baby/toddler; it could make feeding a fidgety toddler much easier and the child too would enjoy it. Securing the child in position with a harness helps you to concentrate fully on feeding the child.
A high chair is beneficial to your child too as it gives the child his/her first feeling of independence as he/she feeds oneself along with the family at meal times.
Buying a high chair is one aspect, while it is another knowing all the styles and choosing the best one.
If your room space is limited, it would be good to go in for folding high chairs that collapse and can be folded away when not in use.
Wooden cube-style highchairs that convert into a low table and chair are bulky, but provide good value for money as they are durable.
Traditional and more attractive to look at; wooden one-piece raised chairs have fewer features, are less flexible and take up more space.
Smaller units that are designed to secure into a table or household chair and provide an alternative to high chairs are booster-style highchairs; they are inexpensive, portable and require less space. Also sometimes used a low chairs they require careful securing and have fewer features.
Look out for these features while choosing a high chair:
Choose a high chair that is easy to clean and does not have unhygienic corners and crevices.
The size, weight and ease of mobility are important considerations in the choosing of high chairs.
The high chair should not only be stable and comfortable to the baby, but should also offer room for growth.
The high chair should have a 5-point harness that is not only effective and easy to use, but should also be detachable and washable. In case of its absence a 5-point harness has to be purchased separately and it is to be ensured that the chair has included adjustment points.
Ensure that the tray is easily removable, can be reconnected and is easy to clean.
In case you get a high chair in which the height can be altered, ensure that the mechanism is not only easy to adjust, but also has strong and effective locking systems.
