What Are The Foods Dogs Should Avoid?

Just as it is important for a dog to get daily exercise and training, it is equally necessary for a dog to get safe and healthy food. We have to be vigilant about the food we give our dogs to prevent them from sickness.   



List of the foods dogs should avoid:


• Grapes and raisins are to be avoided by dogs; it could also lead to kidney failure, with early symptoms of this poisoning being excessive vomiting, increased urination and increased thirst.


• Avocado recognized as a fruit with good number of nutrients is to be avoided by dogs; persin a substance found naturally in this fruit causes allergic reactions in dogs when taken in high doses.


• Alcohol in beer, wine and cocktails and desserts is life-threatening to dog. Also alcohol created in the dog’s stomach through ingesting homemade or store bought yeast dough used in the preparation of bread rolls and pizza is also dangerous. It is best to inform the vet before serious symptoms like seizures appear. Dogs need to be trained to leave or drop such foods both indoors and outdoors and young children are also to be trained not to feed them these foods.  


• Garlic and onions used to spice up dishes are prohibited for dogs; excessive amount of both garlic as well as onions could cause destruction of red blood cells and lead to anemia in dogs. They are more dangerous in increased amount with small level of poisoning causing reduced appetite and lethargy. If your dog acts strange upon taking onion and /garlic make sure you soon call the vet.


No chocolates for dogs


• Chocolates are toxic for dogs with the level of toxins being higher in darker chocolates than in milk chocolate. It is found that when a dog suffers from chocolate poisoning one would display symptoms like seizures, vomiting, and diarrhea. So it is best to avoid baker’s chocolate and cocoa powder.


• Never share your milk or ice-cream with your dog; the digestive system of the dog is very sensitive to dairy products and eating them in large quantity would lead to diarrhea and even to allergies or severe sickness.


• Dogs would best avoid Xylitol, an artificial sweetener found in sugarless gum, candy, and baked goods; it leads to life threatening drop in sugar and liver damage. Even a small ingesting of this sugar free substitute could lower the blood sugar within a few minutes to dangerous levels and bring about vomiting and loss of coordination.


• The salmonella in raw eggs could cause other illnesses, like diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pains. In addition the enzyme found in raw egg may interfere with the absorption of vitamins and result in skin and hair problems.
