Ways To Tame Your Conure To Not Bite

Many species of parrots bite, so do the beautiful and colorful conures; the key to stop them from biting lies in understanding this bird’s behavior. Conures are intelligent birds that first lived in the wild and kept themselves occupied by building nests and finding food. However this is not the case with domesticated conures; they need to be kept occupied with toys they can shred, hidden treats and food.

It is very important to note that these active parrot species need a lot of activities for their happiness and longevity. These intelligent and beautiful birds are also very social and affectionate and need a lot of attention from their masters. It is also significant to note that these intelligent birds can be taught tricks by which they entertain themselves and their masters.

A conure can be tamed to not bite in the following ways:

• It is very important to first observe and know the pet conure’s behavior; conures bite out of fear, being startled or when they are aggressive. They could also bite when they feel threatened; then it is also common for them to hiss, scream, flap its wings, run or hop away, and growl. Never approach your pet bird when it is in a bad mood, wait for it to calm down. Never yell when the conure misbehaves, just speak to him/her in a calm tone. Reward good behavior of your pet conure with attention and treats.

• If a conure bites, try to divert her/his attention by blowing on his/her face or head. Try to figure out the reason for the conure biting to deal with it. Biting could also be simple beaking where he/she uses ones sensitive beak and tongue to explore new things around.

Conure and toys

• Since conures are intelligent and social birds they could also bite out of frustration or boredom if they are not fruitfully occupied or lack company. Domesticated conures consider humans as their flock in the wild and look out for company. Spend quality time with the pet bird by playing and speaking with him/her often. It would also greatly help to move the conure to a high traffic area where there are sounds.

• If the conure bites you, it is best to not pull away; it could make the pet bird bite down or rather it would be encouraged in this behavior. Instead it would help to push the finger that is bitten further down the bird’s beak; this will make the pet conure loosen its grip and then release the finger. It helps to pay attention to the body language of the pet bird and attempt to remove the finger when the conure relaxes and is more approachable.

• Last but most important observe and know the body language of your pet conure to avoid being bitten. Pet conures could also bite with change of hormones during the molting or breeding season. These changes also make conures very difficult to approach.

I am sure you would soon be well equipped to tame your conure to not bite.
