Birds are amazing, intelligent, affectionate, fun and playful; however it is best to know that they are very easily susceptible to relatively small changes in the environment. Come summer it is time we looked after our pet birds to protect them from the heat.

Some ways to make sure our pet birds are cared for this summer:

• It is found that pet birds also experience heatstroke;  look out for signs of heat exhaustion like panting, weakness, inability to maintain balance, holding the wings out, and lying down on the floor of the cage behaving in an anxious and stressed manner.  It then becomes necessary to control the temperature and make it comfortable for your bird. It would help to give your pet bird some fresh sprouts that are packed with nutrition and also provide important fluid. It would also help to do some misting that would not only help add humidity to the bird’s environment, but would also help its respiratory system.

• Yes misting is a great way to prevent overheating of the bird not only when it shows signs of being overheated, but regularly to maintain the pet bird’s core temperature. Most pet birds love to have a bath and an occasional bath during the day would do well. Also you would find that the bird would lift its wings and feet for you to wet those hard to reach places. A word of caution; make sure you mist the bird near it and not directly on it. This will allow the bird to enter it and exit it and allow trust to grow between you and the pet bird. Misting would be fun to both you and the bird and would also make sure your pet does not overheat.

• Providing for shade helps your pet bird from the severe heat of summer; ensuring your bird has some shade even if it stay in an outdoor aviary helps. Being outside is good to have some fresh air and sunshine, but it is best you also provide for some shade to escape the sun whenever it is necessary.

• Next, come summer, make sure your bird has plenty of water not only to drink, but also provide for a bathing dish full of free and clean water at the bottom of the cage. Make sure you replace the water both for bathing and drinking daily and avoid nasty bacteria growing in them due to food particles and other debris.

• Lastly summer times for mot birds also coincide with their breeding season; so ensure that the elevated nutritional requirements of the pet birds are also met. Ensure that you give the pet birds a lot of fresh foods and give them home made treats rich in vitamins.
