It is very essential to bond with budgies as they are social species that should not be left alone; budgies in the wild spend time in huge flocks in everything right from looking for their food to evading predators, with a flock being necessary for its good physical health. Human beings are their companions in captivity; if you cannot spend several hours with the bird, it would help to get another budgie or not adopt one at all.

Adopting a budgie means that you should be ready to talk to it, sing with it and spend time in other interactions several hours in the day; it is not enough if you just spend time interacting when you change the water.

It would help to understand that budgies communicate with each other through sound and body language; since they love making noise you should also join them in this activity. You can talk to them, sing to them as well as ensure you keep their cage in a relatively active room; never forget to wish your budgie a good morning. It would also help to put the radio or television on when you are busy and they have to be left alone.

Hand tamed budgie

One of the essential elements of bonding with a budgie is hand taming; a hand-tame bird is comfortable being touched, fed from the hand and stepping on the hand and riding on his person outside of his cage. Introduce your hand gradually to the pet budgie, first outside then inside the cage till you touch him and offer treats and he steps on your finger; be sure to speak softly and calmly as you introduce your hand. Building trust of the budgie requires several weeks of committed daily training; devote at least 15 minutes each day in hand taming.

Bonding with the budgie could also mean making feeding a social activity with your budgie; you could feed the budgie from your hand or better still eat your meals together, where you share bits of bird-safe foods with him. You could also hand-tame him and put him on your shoulder as you continue with your daily routine; all this interaction goes to create a closer bond with your pet.

Budgies enjoy occasional grooming of each other, so your budgie would enjoy some head scratching or gentle petting as he sits on your finger; you could also give him lukewarm mist baths with a spray bottle. He will spread out his wings if he enjoys it and may also try to drink the mist.

Lastly ensure that you protect him from common household hazards that are fatal to birds once you bond with the budgie and include him in your daily activities. Keep your pet inside his cage when you are cooking or working with a flame. Keep him away from cleaning solutions, especially aerosols and sprays and strong scents and airborne chemicals, like perfumes, hairsprays and scented candles. Also ensure you keep the doors and windows closed when he is out; do not let him mingle with other pets especially cats.
