Only a person that has adopted pet birds would know that they are not only beautiful and entertaining, but can also be taught various impressive tricks. Looking after pets means not only caring for them, but also spending quality time with them to keep them entertained.

Some tips to look after pet birds:

1) Make sure you buy a cage that is fairly big to allow the pet bird to fly about and stretch its wings. The size and type of cage would depend on the bird you adopt; ensure that you add perches in the cage. Also ensure that the gaps in cage are not big to allow the bird to get out and fly away.

2) Ensure you put the cage in a safe place away from other pets like dogs and cats; it is best to avoid possible threats though with time the pet bird would feel more secure with these pet animals.

3) Make sure to clean and sterilize the cage regularly say once or twice a week. Make sure you add a small and extremely shallow birdbath for the bird to freshen itself. Wipe the whole cage including the toys and perches, replace the sand-paper at the bottom of the cage, and clean the food and water bowls and the bird bath water. Use boiled water for sterilization of the perches and food and water bowls.

4) Ensure you keep your pet bird healthy by feeding it a healthy balanced diet meant for that species of bird. Also ensure it has a lot of exercise in the form of enough space and different bird toys. Consult an avian vet in case you suspect any illness.

5) If you do not have sufficient time to devote to your pet bird, consider getting him a companion to keep him entertained in company. Also ensure the 2 birds do not fight; it is best to keep them away from each other for some time till they get adjusted.

6) Treat your pet bird just like your own child; give him care, love and lots of attention. Also ensure he has bird toys to keep it healthy and happy. It is very important to ensure that the pet bird has good and healthy food, safety, warmth and love that your pet bird would thank you for.

7) It would be a great idea to go in for travel cages also; these small sized travel cages would be very convenient especially when taking your pet bird to the vet.

8) It is best to allow your pet bird free out of the cage in a secure room after ensuring that all the window curtains are well drawn and all wires and poisonous plant are either covered or removed. Also ensure you turn off ceiling fans and make sure there is no water in the room that could drown the bird.
