Tips For Feeding A Budgie
Many prefer to keep budgies as pets, with their owners preferring to give the best in life for them; this is only possible by giving them a healthy diet that would not only keep them in good shape, but would keep them happy too. Here are a few tips for feeding budgies.
Tips for feeding budgies:
1) Budgies are seed eating birds and enjoy good quality seeds which they hull with their beaks and eat the seeds inside the shell. A recognized product is Trill bird seed. Do not restrict the amount of seeds as budgies will eat only what it must. Make sure you use a seed mix that has fewer of oats and sunflower seeds.
2) Fruit and vegetables form an important part of the budgie’s diet and can be served in a number of ways like chopped, shredded, diced, sliced, pureed and whole to arouse their curiosity and attract them to eat. Fruits and vegetables are best served raw as cooking them removes the nutrients. Attract a budgie that does not eat fruits and vegetables by putting them chopped in an empty feed cup that is hung in the cage; peg or clip a few leaves of leafy green or any other loved food on it.
3) Mixture of grains like quinoa, brown rice, cracked wheat, barley that are soaked could be served to the budgie; known as soft foods you could add garlic powder, organic natural honey, fruits or vegetables, and then dampen it with water. You could also serve a slice of wheat bread soaked in soy milk.
4) Feed commercial pellets to your budgie by following the manufacturer’s instruction. It is however best to avoid them considerably as they are made out of unnatural blends of dried out food to which colors, preservatives and flavors are added.
5) Meat though not absolutely necessary, provides your budgie with rich sources of protein; serve a few bits of cooked chicken or mealworms once a week or fortnight.
6) Make it a general rule to provide the budgie with fresh water every day in an easy-access water dish. Ensure that clean the water dish daily with vinegar and water before changing the water; the cleaning will prevent the build-up of bacteria that could pass on infection to your loved pet bird.
7) Be careful while feeding your pet budgie; they should be served fruits, vegetables and soft foods every alternate days. Next be very careful while changing a seed mix; it should be done gradually by slowly increasing the quantity of the new seed mix until it is given completely. This suits the delicate system of the budgie very well.
8) Ensure that you do not over feed your pet bird and remember to balance its diet over time; this means giving a little of everything over a period of time to give a complete and balanced diet.
9) The container for the food should be suitable for the budgie; avoid deep containers that make it difficult for the budgie to get to the food.
10) Finally do not forget to provide a cuttlebone and a mineral block; they are a bird’s enrichment activity and provide it with essential nutrients.
