Stretch marks and pregnancy - everything you need to know

Stretch marks and pregnancy go hand in hand; it has been found that every 9 out of 10 women usually develop stretch marks in the 6th to 7th month of pregnancy. It is best to know all about it and understand why you will also be fighting the skin battle like most mothers; remember you are not alone.
Some of the contributing factors for stretch marks are:
1. As most factors, getting stretch marks are also genetic; if your mother has stretch marks during her pregnancy, you too would have them. Stretch marks are developed due to the lack of elastin, the connective tissue needed by the skin to not tear.
2. Stretch marks develop when your skin is not able to keep up with the expansion of your body; as you aim at gaining 25 to 35 pounds of weight during pregnancy your skin is not able to expand and this leads to stretch marks. Remember it is best to not exceed 25 to 35 pounds over your pre-pregnancy weight.
3. It is wrong to assume that one can avoid stretch marks by starting one’s family young; even your young skin cannot stretch beyond certain amount and would tear under pressure. However it is vital to understand that as your skin matures it loses its firmness and is not able to stretch enough for a growing body.
4. Most stretch marks on the hips, abdomen, breasts, and buttocks happen due to hormonal changes that increase the fragility of the skin and make them prone to tearing; most of us will still see these marks of our teen years. It is to be believed that these marks do not happen overnight; you will soon forget them when you have a beautiful bonny baby.
All said and done you can prevent or at least reduce the appearance of these marks. Dermatologists suggest rich creams or oils to moisturize your skin twice a day; in case prevention does not work their appearance can be reduced by pulsed dye laser treatments or adopting an attitude of having those battle scars; stretch marks with pride.
