Most of us are fond of taming pet birds like budgie but may experience some difficulty. You could easily tame a budgie with some patience and it is advisable that initially only one person should deal with the budgie.

Steps to tame your pet budgie:

1) The first step is to get the budgie used to you; just sit next to the cage for the first 3 or 4 days and then talk normally in soft and calm voice. It would help to read a book aloud, talk about the day’s events and other general things. You could do this for about 10 minutes thrice a day.

2) As the budgie gets acquainted to your sitting and taking to her/him, slowly rest your hand at the bottom of the cage. It is quite possible she may flutter around quite a bit; then just talk to her/him again and the budgie may recognize your voice.

3) When the budgie is comfortable with your hand resting on the bottom, tear off a little piece of a millet spray and move it towards your pet bird. If he/she is scared, stop and allow the budgie to calm down and come to you; he/she will ultimately first out of curiosity and then taste. Do it 3 times a day. Budgies love millet; but do not put the millet in the cage until it is fully trained. Also avoid feeding too much millet to the budgie as it is fattening and unhealthy.

4) Once he/she is comfortable eating millet from your hand, move it to the center of your hand, forcing her to step onto your hand to reach the millet. This could be repeated thrice a day till the millet is gone.

5) Once comfortable with jumping on your hand to eat the millet, hold out your finger and move your hand towards her chest. Push your hand against his/her chest increasing the pressure until the budgie steps up; make sure you do not move your hand if she looks a little tense or like she might jump off soon. Just put her/him back down onto the perch.  Repeat this action for a few times and if he/she flies off than walk off and try later. Do this at least 3 times a day. If he/she still doesn't gently throw a towel over his/her whole body and gently and firmly grab the budgie inside the towel and quickly find the head and expose it. Then calmly release it back in its cage.

6) Great if your pet budgie steps up on your finger; it is time now to slowly move your finger around the cage so he/she gets used to being on a moving hand.

7) Once she/he is comfortable with your hand moving while she/he is sitting on it, it is time to try taking her/him out of the cage; do not get discouraged if she/her flies back inside the cage. You could try later after some time. It is best to ensure that all the windows are closed when taking him/her out of the cage otherwise they might fly out.

To conclude taming a budgie no doubt requires patience, but it proves very rewarding.
