Some Things Only A Teenage Girl’s Mother Would Understand

Parenting my teenage children has been an enjoyable experience; though it has been different as teenage is a critical stage when children change from being a child to an adult. I thought I would share with my readers of indiapulse.sulekha.com some of the things that only a teenage girl’s mother would understand.

Some things only a mother of a teenage girl understands:

• Most mothers feel hurt when their daughters as teenagers no longer share everything about their lives and keep secrets from them.  As they grow from girls to full fledged women they feel more comfortable sharing confidences with their friends. Teenage girls may act rude if their mothers are inquisitive, as they feel happy in the feeling that they have their own lives.  Only mothers would understand that this behavior is more a part of getting independent.

• Teaching teenage girls driving is what fathers begin, but mother’s complete. This is not to say that dads are smarter, patient or better drivers; it is just that dads feel happy and relaxed to get a chance to listen to the game on the radio without interruption unless she crashes. Well mothers can never be good driving instructors as they are nervous wrecks.

• Most mothers of teenage girls would only understand that warnings, lectures and stories of their failures shared from the depth of their hearts would stop them from doing the same mistakes, though teenagers will make their own share of different mistakes. Parents may feel that the world is a dangerous place and may want to shout loud or shake our teenage daughters by the shoulder; nevertheless we just have to trust everything and assume they will make smart choices. If they do make mistakes we have to still love them and help them fix the mistakes; this is what mothers of teenage girls do.

Teenager with PMS

• Only mothers of teenage girls would understand that pre-menstrual syndrome or PMS is real; they would understand when their daughters have their moods and tempers only to apologize just a week later. These mood swings and temper takes place due to hormonal changes in the teenager’s body that makes them behave as if possessed by exorcists. It is best to stay away from teenage girls during this period.

• Teenage daughters love to diet and only their mothers would understand their being possessed by their body image. They would stand for hours before the mirror and twist and turn, trying to decide if their clothes really fitted them well and the ones to discard. Only mothers would know how and when to emphasize the need for good health and exercise.

• Lastly only mothers of teenage daughters know how to teach them that sex is not a 4 lettered word; children need to be taught when young about sex in age appropriate language and about changes as a teenager. Only mothers know how to teach their teenagers that sex is a loving relationship between 2 individuals for life and was not a one night stand.
