The grandmothers of New York always enjoyed getting together to discuss the ways their grandchildren could get the best of everything; they again met this month, with most of them being positive about sending their grandchildren to preschool. Here are some more of the reasons they felt preschool helped their grandchildren.

Some more reasons to send your child to preschool:

Preschool promotes language and cognitive skills: Some of the grandmothers felt that children’s language skills were nurtured in the language rich environment of pre-school; teachers in these schools helped to increase the language skills of the children through thought provoking questions and introduced them to vocabulary during science, snack time, art and other activities. Teachers also offered children ample opportunities to talk about their favorite books, sing and also act out plays.

Next a young child’s cognitive abilities are strengthened by engaging them in various hands-on activities that challenges him/her to observe closely, ask questions and test their ideas to solve problems. Though the child’s answers may not be logical from the adult point of view, but surely encourage their curiosity.

Pre-school children learn to make choices: A child that goes to pre-school has a wide choice of activities to indulge him, with the teachers encouraging him/her to choose an activity of one’s interest. Teachers also offer suggestions to a child on entering a suitable play group.

Preschool helps develop motor skills: This was the opinion of 2 of the grandmothers whose grandchildren went to preschool; high quality preschools allowed the children to do various activities that involved running, climbing and other active games that improved their physical coordination. Also children are exposed to various activities like threading beads and cutting with scissors that developed fine motor skills. Children were also introduced to various activities that helped build balance and hand-eye coordination.

Preschool teachers nurture a child's curiosity: A grandma of a child that went to a good preschool emphasized that her preschool offered ample opportunity for active imagination and make belief play. Activities were created on the interests and ideas of the children, so that there is a curiosity and motivation to learn. Even a caterpillar in the outdoor play area can provide an exciting opportunity to learn.

It is also significant to note that an imaginary play area in a high-quality preschool is well-stocked with costumes, "props," and child-size household items such as stoves, sinks and cupboards; this helps a child to graduate from solitary play, to one-on-one play, to complicated group play.

Maths and language skills in preschool

Preschool activities boost pre-math and literacy skills: Most young children show growing interest in pre-math and pre-literacy skills, with teachers engaging them in various games and activities that help them acquire pre- math and literacy skills essential for kindergarten.

Teachers introduce them to letters and word sounds, with rhymes and chants teaching them about the distinct sound within words. Discussions about exciting read aloud books encourage young children to listen, comprehend and use expressive language skills. Matching games, sorting games, counting games, and board games build children's understanding of number, categories and sequence. Putting together puzzles encourages children to notice patterns, plan ahead and problem-solve.

Finally the grandmas concluded that a high-quality preschool assures parents that their child is well cared for, enjoy activities and makes friends and is building the knowledge, skills, and confidence to do well in kindergarten.
