A disorder of the children with special needs is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD; this complex problem that affects the child’s ability to concentrate and focus affects the child’s success in school, social life and interpersonal relationships. A close evaluation of these children will project certain signs that differentiate them from other active ordinary children. Most children with this special need are diagnosed by 7 years of age.



Some important signs of ADHD:



• These children care only about themselves and are unable to recognize the needs of others. An ADHD child will interrupt when others are speaking and also have trouble waiting for their turn in activities in the classroom and while playing games with other children.



• You will find that the children with attention deficiency hyperactivity disorder are generally always active; they fidget and squirm and find it difficult to be still even for a single minute. When they are forced to sit quietly, they will fidget or squirm in their chair.



• An ADHD child finds it very difficult to keep their good and bad emotions; they quite often have outbursts of laughter, anger and temper tantrums at the most inappropriate times.



• Children with ADHD have a wide range of interests, but they have difficulty in seeing a task to the end. You may find this child start a chore, homework or project, but they will leave it unfinished as some other task catches their interest. This fluctuation of interests makes them suffer at tasks in school.



• It is frustrating that these children find it very difficult to pay attention to what is told to them even when directly addressed; since their mind is preoccupied with many things they may find it difficult to repeat what was just told to them.  



• These children are day dreamers; though ADHD children are projected as rambunctious and loud. They are quieter and less involved then other children and you may quiet often see them staring into space ignoring what is going on around them.



• Children with this hyperactive and attention deficiency disorder may make careless mistakes; though they are as intelligent as most other children, they often have difficulty in following instructions that require planning and executing a plan.

Children with ADHD could have fun playing active outdoor games like hopscotch, swinging, and jumping rope; however skip these activities if it is close to bedtime.



Bedtime routine is very important for children with ADHD; bedtime should be quiet time with low key activities like watching a movie, sitting in a rocking chair, or reading a book that would help these children to calm down for the night.



Lastly be specific with your directions and make sure the child with ADHD has listened and understood by asking him/her to repeat the directions back to you.
