Being a mother for the first time is a very enhancing experience; at the same time mothers need to know some most important things about a new baby before bringing him/her home.

Know these most important things about newborns:

If a baby is under 3 months and has a rectal temperature above 100.4 F, it is an emergency. The exception is only for 24 hours after the first set of immunizations at 2 months.

Never give Tylenol to a baby under 3 months old and Ibuprofen products like Advil or Motrin until the baby is over 6 months old, unless the pediatrician prescribes it.

You need to know how to strap your baby when bringing him/her from the hospital; so try out your car-seat with a stuffed animal.

Learn to correctly swaddling your baby; it will help calm and soothe a fussy baby and put her/him to sleep.

Your newborn during the first few days back home may be confused between days and nights. Calm your baby in the middle of the night with white noise, a tight swaddle and dim lights.

You can help your baby breathe and eat better during a common infant congestion by suctioning the nose out correctly; prevent suctioning from becoming an irritant by not doing it more than 4 times in a day.

A circumcised penis heals in about 2 weeks; prevent the skin from retracting by pulling back the foreskin every night when you change the diaper and before a bath.

You could easily use an adult bath-tub to bathe your baby; a plastic bath tub is less spacious and does not keep the water warm. Using an adult bath tub means less work, the water stays warm, and babies have more room to kick.

It is not necessary to adopt a bottle system that has the best marketing campaign; it is best to use the standard, old-fashioned nipple shape that is also least expensive.

Try to stick to one brand and type of formula; every change in formula takes about 3-5 days for the baby’s digestive system to adjust. This could result in increased gassiness and fussiness. Formula changes should be approved by the pediatrician.
