Major milestones when your baby learns to talk (1-2 years)

  • Link Copied

The first two years of a baby is very crucial; he/she learns to talk though your baby learns the rules of the language much before he/she utters the first word. He/she will use his/her tongue, lips, palate, and any emerging teeth to make sounds, with these sounds turning into real words when he/she is 6 months old.

A baby picks up various words from you and people around and you will find that between 18 months to 2 years he/she will begin to form 2 or 4 word sentences. With the mental, emotional and behavioral leaps that your baby makes he/she is able to describe what he sees, hears, feels, thinks, and wants. It is best to note here that a baby raised in a bi-lingual environment develops language milestones at the same time in both languages.

When a baby becomes 12 months or 1 year, he/she begins to babble and vocalize a lot and your toddler seems to make sounds that make sense. He/she is tries out various tones and patterns that are similar to what you use. You could foster the babbling of your kid by talking, reading and listening to him/her.

Major milestones in talking between the ages of 1 to 2 years:

Ages 13 to 18 months:

Your child learns and uses more words fully knowing what they mean; he/she may raise one’s tone while asking a question like "Up-py?" when she wants to be carried. He/she starts realizing the importance of language and how it can be used to communicate one’s needs.

2 year old talking

Ages of 19 to 24 months:

Your baby now uses about 50 words but will understand more than what he/she says; he/she is constantly picking up words from you, so you need to use good language always. He/she may string together and make sentences of 2 to 3 words like "Carry me." When your toddler is 2, he/she may make 2 or 4 letter words and also sing simple tunes. He/she will soon talk about what he/she likes, feels and thinks. He/she may confuse pronouns and may say "Baby throw" instead of "I throw."

Last but most important it is best to consult a doctor if your child at 2 years can't follow simple instructions, doesn’t point to body parts , can't copy words and actions, or uses only single words.

I will soon tell you about the major milestones in talking between 2 to 3 years.
