Know How To Find A Good Bird Sitter

My niece Durga was going for a vacation for a week after a few weeks and was worried about how she would find a bird sitter for her budgie; she neither had friends or family that could look after the pet bird nor she was ready to put her bird in a boarding facility. Geeta her friend that owned a budgie for a few years assured her that there was a rise in the number of bird sitters in almost all parts of the world and gave her tips to choose the right bird sitter for her budgie.

It is strongly recommended that you resist the urge to select one of the advertised pet sitting businesses in your area; it is very essential that the business should have good experience in caring for birds. There may be pet sitting businesses that are good with cats and dogs, but may not be good in looking after your exotic pet bird, that may get stressed due to your unexplained absence.

Do not get discouraged if you do not find a pet sitting facility immediately; the next reliable source is at your avian vet’s office. You could discuss your travel plans with your vet and ask him/her if one can recommend a competent bird sitter. Many competent bird sitters also advertise their business with the local vets. It is quite possible that the vet may give you 2 to 3 suitable recommendations; they could be technicians who work in the clinic and who you might already be familiar with.

Getting someone the vet recommends could be a safe bet to entrust the care of your pet bird when you are away on a vacation. In case you get no proper recommendations from the vet, you could probably consider asking for recommendations from other pet owners that you might know; veteran pet owners would be the best to give you suitable recommendations.

Having located a potential bird sitter, it would be a good idea to ask them to meet you at home; this gives you a chance to judge if the bird and the bird sitter are comfortable with each other. It is best to note here that some birds are gender biased, while others may simply not click with the bird sitter you have chosen and may get overly stressed.

The next step is to discuss your expectations as well as the payment for bird sitting. The sitter will have to come daily to make sure the bird is fed, given clean water and the cage tray is emptied. If the bird is quite comfortable with the sitter, you could also ask him/her to work on supervised play time.

Last, but most importantly make sure the bird sitter is familiar with your bird first aid kit and your vet's contact information. Once you have covered all the bases, you can relax and enjoy during the vacation being sure your pet bird is in safe hands.
