Know How To Become A Kennel Assistant
My friend Vani told me that her son Sohrab really liked animals and wished to do a part time job with animals; he wanted to be a kennel assistant in the summer before he joined college. He also thought it would be very useful to learn about animals as he wanted to be a vet in life. We got to talking and sharing our information on the subject with each other.
The reason why a person wants to be a kennel assistant is that he has a love and passion for animals; a passion and love for any job makes you good at it. There is as such no formal education for this job with most being teenagers or just out of high school. Youngsters wishing to pursue veterinary studies may also the job of a kennel assistant in kennels or shelters to increase their experience with animals. They receive most of their training and experience on the job.
If you are interested in working as a kennel assistant you can get a job in boarding kennels, animal shelters, or even veterinary offices. You could research for jobs in your area by making phone calls or making visits to kennels that hire people.
Get a resume attractively prepared or fill in the application for the job before being called for an interview; ensure you dress professionally and are polite and respectful in the interview. Though experience is not mandatory for the job of a kennel assistant, most businesses hire those with some experience; ensure you list anything relevant to the application like walking neighborhood dogs or pet sitting in the resume.
Talking about some of the duties that the job of a kennel assistant entail we could say that they have to give food and water to dogs and cats who are boarded, clean the cages, take the boarded dogs on regular walks, take the pets to a vet appointment if necessary, and sometimes even perform some grooming tasks. A kennel assistant is to be strong enough to handle large dogs and not be afraid of animals.
In addition kennel assistants may also be required to assist the kennel owner in his office with answering phones or assisting customers; good customer care skills and computer skills would be an added advantage. It is also important to understand that the work in kennels and shelters are different, so it would be an advantage to know about the business in advance to look knowledgeable and competent at the interview.
Last, but equally important it is best to know that the pay for a kennel assistant is generally fairly minimal and sometimes volunteering; all the same it is a rewarding and satisfying job for one that love and have a passion for animals.
