Know About Putting Parents In A Nursing Home

I visited my friend Mala the other day; she was in tears because she had to put her father in a nursing home. Much as she must have tried she was finding it difficult to cope up with looking him as she was herself having some health complaints that made it difficult for her to cope up.

It is quite true that placing one’s parent/parents in a nursing home can be a traumatic and difficult event in your life; however this decision becomes much easier when one understands what is involved, the need of the parents and a number of other factors. There is nothing to feel guilty as this could probably be the best decision considering your parent’s safety and care.

How to put your parent/parents in a nursing home:

At first it would help to talk to your parents about your concerns regarding specialized care and the other challenges of providing care to them. Some parents may easily take to this decision as they do not want to be a burden on their children, while others may accuse you of betraying them or wanting to get rid of them. It would be significant to note here that caregivers dealing with incontinent parents or those diagnosed with a form of dementia should decide when it's time.

Next it is time to look for a right nursing home for your parent/parents; the choice of a suitable nursing home would depend on the type of services offered by the nursing home. It should offer a secure and safe environment; if your parent/parents suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s make sure they have a secure wing or a section of the facility that provides a safe and calm environment.

Now it is also the time to visit a number of facilities in your area and watch the interaction between residents and staff. It is important to look around to make sure elders are not left sitting by themselves for long periods of time and see how quickly call lights are answered by nurses or nurse's aides. You can ask to keep both your parents together in case you admit both of them. Know about the diet schedule and if it suits your parents.

While checking on the facilities it is also necessary to make sure nurses are available 24/7, and about steps that would be taken in the event of a medical emergency. Next, talk to the nursing home administrator about placement and how your parents could be admitted to the facility.

Next prepare yourself mentally to take your elder to the nursing home; overcome feelings of guilt and doubt in your mind by understanding your decision is based on your parent’s ultimate safety and security. It is quite likely that your parents will express anger, tears, begging and, sometimes, silence. Lastly promise and visit your parents on a regular basis or call them; this will make them feel good and involved in your life.
