Is Being A Caregiver Your Cup Of Tea?
This question arose in my mind on observation of some of my family and friends; not all are made to be caregivers and there is nothing to feel ashamed or bad about it. As it has been rightly said that each person has his/her own unique talents and flaws; if you do not find care giving to be fulfilling then it is better to hire a professional caregiver who would be in a better position to care for your loved elder.
Time to engage a professional caregiver:
If you lose your patience often: This is one of the first signs the job of a caregiver is not for you; you would be losing your patience with not only your loved elder, but also with family and friends. This shows you are frustrated with your life and also cannot handle the stress and pressure of being a caregiver. I am sure you care for your relationship with your near and dear; the best step is to hire a professional caregiver to take up your responsibilities with the loved elder.
If there is a change in your sleep pattern: Disruption of sleep is the first sign of stress; your body could react with a changing sleep pattern that could increase your stress further. The disruption of sleep night after night could affect the quality of your life and health; the best option in this case to reduce your stress level and bring your sleep pattern back to normal by hiring a professional caregiver from a home care company.
If you are constantly making excuses: All of us are in the habit of making excuses when we dislike doing something or want to get out of the event; it is time for retrospection when you make excuses to show up at the loved one’s house or show up late or find excuses to not show up. You probably are not cut for the role of a caregiver or do not enjoy the job; the time is right to quit and find a new caregiver for your loved one. It is not a sign of defeat to give up, but one of strength and would help both you and the loved elder feel better.
These 3 aspects show that being a caregiver is not your cup of tea; however there is nothing to be ashamed just because you can’t because only some may have the talents to render good care to elders while others can only provide emotional and financial support. Instead you could visit them and even arrange for them to have competent and loving care.
Finally you are not a failure because you cannot care give; feel proud of yourself for admitting that you simply are not the best person to care for your elderly loved one and find a good caregiver for your loved elder and feeling reassured that your loved one is getting nurturing and compassionate care, and enjoy your loved one’s presence each time you visit them.
