How to start solid food diet for your baby

I had the chance to attend a meeting of young mothers who were concerned about when and how to introduce solid foods. It is true that more than half the parents are confused on when and how to introduce solid food in their baby’s diet; this made the new mothers feel that they were not alone.

Here is a write-up of what pediatrician who addressed them said:

According to the AAP or American Academy of Pediatrics, the most ideal age to introduce solids is 6 months; though there is as such no perfect time. Understand your child is unique and it is best to consult your child’s pediatrician regarding his/her specific nutritional needs.

It is however very important that your baby be introduced to solids when he/she is able to hold his/her head upright and is able to use one’s tongue to push the food into the mouth and not exhibit what is known as an extrusion reflex.

Baby fruits and vegetables

Starting off on solids requires starting off with iron-rich foods or iron-fortified cereals; iron that is very essential for red blood cells is deficient in breast milk. Slowly and gradually the baby can be introduced to vegetables and fruits of different textures, flavors and tastes.

Last but most important the pediatrician asked the new mothers to relax and enjoy their baby’s experience in expanding his palate.
