It would be apt first to understand some of the common difficulties of bringing up children as a single parent.

It is very difficult to bring up a child, with the stake being high when there is an absence of a partner. The single parent has to take the responsibility of all aspects in a day-to-day life that leads to pressure, stress and fatigue. Also the child could develop behavioral problems if you are tired and distracted to be emotionally supportive or to consistently discipline your child.

Parents with single parent usually have lower income and less access to health care; this makes juggling work and childcare difficult and socially isolating, with your regretting the lack of a male/female member.

How to raise a child as a single parent:

• Create a routine in the day like scheduled meals and bedtimes; this would help the child to know what to expect and will also reduce stress.

• Remember as a single parent to show love to your baby and praise him, or her; also make it a general rule to give him/her unconditional love and support and spend quality time with the child playing, reading or just listening to him/her.

Unconditional love

• Do not feel guilty or blame yourself for being a single parent and spoil the child to make up for it.

• If you need regular childcare look for a qualified caregiver that can provide stimulation in a safe environment; also be careful about relying on an older child as the babysitter or taking into confidence a new friend.

• Set and enforce house rules and expectations like speaking respectfully. Also make sure that other caregivers also work on this consistent discipline. It would help consider re-evaluating certain limits, such as your child's screen time, when he or she shows the ability to accept more responsibility.

• Learn to accept the fact that you are not alone; learn to work out carpool schedule with other parents and join support groups for single parents. It would also help to seek social service and enlist the help of trusted friends, family and neighbors. Some useful resources could also be faith communities.

• Being a single parent also means taking care of yourself ; take care you include physical activity as a part of your daily schedule and also eat a healthy diet and have quality sleep. You should also schedule activities you can do alone and with your close friends.

• Stay positive with your child; it is alright if you tell your child when you are having a difficult time. But remind your child that things would soon get better. Also make sure you use your sense of humor in dealing with the challenges of everyday life.
