Boarding a dog when you go on a vacation or business is more easily said than done, with it moving smoothly with a little preparation before their stay. For dogs that have never been boarded it would be a good idea to book an initial stay that would provide you the reassurance that the stay will be comfortable. In most good kennels it is common to find that a dog will accept their stay as just part of their normal way of life.

Here are a few tips that could prepare your dog for boarding:

Prior to booking your dog in a kennel make sure the vaccinations are current and the dog is healthy and eating normally. This is a very essential requirement for their boarding license.

Inform the kennel of any unusual fears or habits that the dog has while boarding or booking; this will help the kennel staff to handle the problem cautiously. Also alert the staff if the dog is possessive of food bowls and has any allergies or health/exercise issues.

Next inform the staff at the kennel if your dog is a constant worrier; it would be a good idea for you to drop them at the kennel before you start packing for your vacation. This would avoid your dog getting anxious about routine changes when the suitcases start to come out and the packing starts.

You could either pack your dog’s own food or allow the kennel to provide food from a selection of wet or dry feeds. It is advised that if the dog has a delicate tummy, it is best to supply your dog’s regular food.

Next if your dog is on some medication ensure that you bring it in an original labeled container; make sure you give the kennel detailed instructions regarding its use. Also ensure you give supply for a few extra days in case your return is delayed.

If your dog has a favorite toy or blanket you could provide them from your home. You may also like to leave items of clothing to remind their dogs of home and are a great stress reliever.

As you board your dog, you could either leave him/her at the reception on a lead or go down to the kennels to settle your pet into their new surroundings. Do not get emotional when leaving your dog as they could pick up on the stress of the occasion and become worried. It would be best to hand the lead to the kennel staff and quietly slipping away; if the dog has a complicated harness or head collar ensure you explain to the kennel staff how it works.

Make sure you leave your phone number, e-mail address and the contact details of your friend, neighbor or relative. Also it is advised that you give the kennel precise details if someone would visit or collect the dog on your behalf.

Life at a boarding kennel could be an exciting and rollercoaster of emotions for many dogs; it is quite possible that your dog may sleep a bit more after his return from the kennel. He may also be thirstier and exhibit a different level of activity; they are normal behavior as your companion readjusts back to their normal way of life.

Find a good boarding kennel and relax having a great vacation.
