Hamsters make great pets with Syrian hamsters being much friendlier and calmer than other hamster varieties. These hamsters are best suited for first time hamster owners and young children. The first step to adopting hamsters is to prepare to welcome your pet Syrian hamster home.

How to adopt a Syrian hamster:

Having decided to adopt a hamster it is necessary to get all things that would make the hamster happy and healthy. The cage for a Syrian hamster is to be a minimum of 360 square inches. If you cannot get a suitable big cage it is best to get a 20 Gallon Long Tank, a Bin Cage, or a DIY cage to avoid your Syrian hamster from being severely cramped.

Next it is important that the cage has safe bedding; avoid cotton or string fluffy bedding as they are dangerous for your pet Syrian hamster. It would be good to use shredded toilet paper as a nesting material. Avoid bedding with fragrance like cedar, redwood and pine bedding as they would irritate the respiratory system of your pet. Perfect and safe bedding for your hamster should be Aspen and Care Fresh.

It would be ideal to use hutches made for guinea pigs and rabbits for your hamsters; this is especially true of pregnant females that need a lot of space and will not want to climb all over the cage.

You will need a carry case for your hamster; it should have secure lids that prevent the hamster from escaping; expensive ones are definitely a better option than cheap ones that are not secure.

It is best to be aware that Syrian hamsters grow to be 11 inches long, with most Syrian hamsters having a full grown size between 7" and 9" long, with Black Bear Syrian hamsters growing up to 11”. So it is very difficult to house Syrian hamsters in   "tube" cages like Habit rails and Critter trails.

It is ideal to include a nest box in the cage that could serve both as a bedroom and a pantry; they should be large enough to accommodate your Syrian hamster when it grows.

Purchase a cage that is at least 80cm x 50cm x 40cm or about 30" x 20" x 16"; it could easily house a large wheel, larger huts and accessories for your pet Syrian hamster. You would save a lot of money by not going in for starter cage, but cages that could serve their entire lifespan of 2 to 3 years.

It is best to house a Syrian hamster is not only a big cage, but in a multi-level rat cage. This cage and other accessories like wheels and huts for Syrian hamsters should be bigger than for a Dwarf hamster. It is best to have an eleven inch wheel, with wooden wheels being best for them. Also ensure that you do not have wire flooring for the cage.

Lastly Syrian hamsters require to be kept in quiet places of the house as they could be stressed by loud and sudden noises. Also they should not be disturbed as they sleep or they could be prone to illness.
