Much as you would love to take your feathered companion on a vacation, it would be a great challenge. It would be best to find a bird setter for your pet bird, with many bird sitters have popping up much in recent times.

As the owner of a pet bird it is best to resist the urge to contact any advertised pet sitting business at all in your area; it is first necessary to make sure that he/she has an experience to deal with birds as many pet sitters have experience in dealing only with pet animals like dogs, cats and rabbits. They might not do so well taking care of an exotic bird that is first likely to be stressed due to your unexplained absence.

This is not a fact to be discouraged as if you look hard you may be able to find a bird sitter or a boarding facility for your bird. The best place to start looking for is an avian vet’s office. You could discuss your travel plans with him/her and he/she could recommend any competent bird sitters that might be right for the job.

It is quite possible that the avian vet could recommend 2 to 3 people who could also be technicians that work at the clinic whom you are familiar with. You could easily trust the person to properly take care of your pet bird while you are away. In case you do not find anyone good enough you could consider contacting other bird owners or friends and relatives that the bird recognizes and gets along with.

Having located a suitable bird sitter, it would be advisable to ask him/her to meet you at your home. This would give you a chance to make sure if the bird and the bird sitter are comfortable with each other. It would be advisable here to note that some of the pet birds are gender biased or they may have their own reasons to not get along with a bird sitter; be sure to listen to the bird as it could get stressed during your absence.

The next procedure is to discuss the payment terms and your expectations from him/her during your absence. As a common practice you may want the pet sitter to visit your home at least once a day to feed the bird, give it water and make sure that the cage tray is emptied. He/she may work on some supervised play time if you find the bird and the bird sitter get along with each other.

The last few instructions would be to make sure that the chosen bird sitter is familiar with your bird first aid kit and your vet's contact information; this will keep him/her prepared for accidents. All this will help you relax and enjoy the vacation knowing your pet bird is in good hands.
