How To Babysit An Autism Child
As my mind revolved around writing an article on how to babysit a special needs child, I thought it would be appropriate to write about babysitting an autism child; most of the ways are experiences of a babysitter of an autism child. Children with autism think and process information different from other normal children; it is best to be aware of the needs of these children before you babysit them.
The how’s to babysit autism children:
It is best to first know from parents about the child’s communication and behavioral patterns and preferences. Ask them to first write it down and try to stick to the rules and routine. Also find out what the child likes and does not like to do and how often he/she should be allowed to do it; like a favorite movie may be watched once during babysitting time.
Try to know from the parents how they tackle difficult situations and problems; try to find out what calms the child when upset and things that you should avoid doing. Many autism kids do not like being hugged by non-family members.
Many kids with autism do not eat certain foods and are allowed or restricted to eat certain foods; know about it from the parents of the autism child.
An autism child may have a list of special exercises and activities to help them stay balanced and certain activities that help them calm down when they are wound up. Know about these exercises and activities from the child’s parents.
Know from the parents the best way to interact with their autism child; this is essential as some children are unable to speak and use special ways of communication such as pictures and sign language.
Do not hesitate to ask many questions from the parents of an autism child, as it is in your interest to know everything about the child. Autism affects kids in different ways, with no two children with the like conditions. Your questioning the parents only reassures the parents that you are a good caregiver for their son/daughter.
It is best to spend time with the child and parents together before your first babysitting session to get used to his/her behavior patterns and know firsthand how the parents handle the child. This time would also allow the child to know you in the comfort and presence of a parent.
Once you start babysitting the autism child ensure that you stick to the child's usual routine and rules. Give him/her simple instructions and ensure he/she completes one task/activity before giving instructions for another.
Next avoid bringing people not known to the child to the home while you are babysitting; also ensure you take the child to places he/she is familiar with like a nearby park.
To conclude babysitting an autism child means focusing wholly on the child. Do keep contact numbers for emergencies, including ways to reach the parents if needed.
