How Much Exercise Does A Small Dog Need?
Some dog owners think that a small dog needs less or no exercise; not necessarily, the amount of exercise that a dog needs depends on his breed, age and health. It is sometimes found that large breeds of dogs like Mastiff just need 2 walks a day, while a smaller breed like Jack Russell Terrier needs more exercise.
Here are a few pointers regarding the exercise that small dogs need:
• There is no strict rule regarding the amount of exercise each pet dog requires; big breeds like Great Dane are ready to watch the world go from the comfort of a couch, while your pint sized dynamo may want to explore everything and indulging in destructive behavior like excessive barking and chewing on the sofa; it is time to channelize your pint sized dynamo energy somewhere and give him more activity in the form of exercise.
• Exercise for your small dog can be arranged in your backyard; playing ball or fetch is a popular game that most dogs love. It is best to play this game with your dog on soft surfaces like the grass or carpet; also be cautious about the amount of play the dog should indulge in and watch out for signs like heavy panting and returning the item less joyously to stop.
• Exercise in the backyard for your pooch would be easier, if you have other pets also, as they would have fun engaging each other. However it cannot substitute for a daily walk or two, as walking not only provides physical activity, but also provides for mental stimulation. Walking a few blocks with sniffing, seeing sights and hearing sounds would not only give the senses of your dog a work-out, but would also make your dog a well adjusted and calmer pet. Walks are a great way for you and your pet dog to bond and for him to practice his social skills.

• You could multi-task by finding a playgroup for your dog; you could interact with other dog owners when your dog socializes with other dogs. However it is best to engage your small dog in a playgroup of small dogs that are socialized, as being with big dogs could lead to accidents and also be scary for small dogs; it could also make your dog more aggressive.
• Last, but most important make sure your dogs, whether big or small gets exercise as a daily routine; regular exercise helps tome the muscles, build strong bones, improves circulation and pumps “feel good” hormones in your pet dog. Your dog will sleep well and be happy and well behaved; you would also be a happy owner.
