Helping Twins Bond - Getting off on the right foot!

  • Link Copied

It could be an exciting experience having twins, triplets….., but it is also a very exhausting experience having to care for 2 or more babies at the same time and do justice to all. How very true it is that it could be a complete chaos with feeding, changing, winding, and nappy changing! You could overcome this chaos by making an attempt to organize yourself and stick to it.

Getting off the right foot with twins and helping them to bond:

It takes a lot of energy both physically and mentally to care for twins or more, with one parent going out to earn a living. It would help for parents to take turns looking after the babies in the night.

Let not the crying emotionally and mentally drain you; take time out when you need. It is quite possible that when you return after a few moments the twins would have stopped crying or cried themselves to sleep.

Rest and sleep is equally important for the mothers as the twin; take a nap when the kids are napping and do not feel guilty or proud to ask for help and take it all on yourself. Your nap should be not only quantitative, but qualitative too, so keep your answering machine switched on to take all messages without interruption while you feed, bathe, change, or taking that well-earned rest.

It would be a great idea to find out and join local twins clubs where you could relax without being the center of attraction with twins. These clubs share a wealth of shared experience and also negotiate a series of discounts on a wide range of products.

Prioritize relegating housework to the bottom of your priorities; minimize your chores and keep your buggy and changing bag accessible. It would also help to keep a supply of wipes, cotton wool and nappies both upstairs as well as downstairs.

Avoid the tendency to compare your babies with other kids or your kids between themselves; every baby is unique. Also you are as good a mother as others who would also have the same difficulties if they had two or more babies.

Never feel guilty when it becomes too much and you cry with exhaustion; believe me you can tackle anything if you tackled the first year of your twins. It would be a real pleasure to find the 2 contented toddlers babbling away with each other. Savor and enjoy each moment with your babies to gain enough strength to get through a bad day and a bad hour.

Lastly ensure that you have some “me time” that would help you feel sane and relaxed.
