Your infant/toddler’s eyes are a window to their personality and a very crucial organ for his/her cognitive development. You cannot take your eyes out of your toddler/infant’s eyes; they are constantly looking and learning about the world around them. So it is very essential that you take good care of their eyes and keep them in tip-top condition.

How to take care of your toddler/infant’s eyes:

Ensure that you clean your baby’s eyes with great care making sure to be extra gentle with the extra thin and sensitive skin around the eyes while washing his/her face or during tub time. Clean any residue you may see on the eye-lashes with a soft wash cloth that has been moistened in lukewarm water. If necessary you could use a dab of no-tears shampoo.

Ensure that you protect your eyes from injury; prevention is always better than cure. Childproofing your home by looking around for toddler-height hazards, like sharp corners on your coffee table or shelves that stick out from the wall. Also keep out of reach other potential eye-pokers like pencils, pens, sticks, and toys with rods or sharp edges. It is also best to ensure that you keep household cleaners and other toxic substances out of your toddler’s reach; they could damage or irritate your toddler’s eyes on contact.

Ensure that you keep your tiny tot at a safe distance when you’re mowing the lawn or working with power tools that create flying debris or dust.

Ensure that you regularly have your toddler’s eye examined by his/her pediatrician to ensure its health. Tell him/her if you notice any difficulty your child eyes as he/she not being able to see at a distance, or squinting  frequently, or his/her eyes look crossed at times. Your toddler could be referred to an ophthalmologist for a more in-depth exam.

Just as you protect your toddler’s sensitive skin from the UV rays of the sun by applying a sun-screen, you need to shade and protect his/her eyes from the UV rays. This helps prevent squints and even cataracts later in life. Let your toddler wear a wide-brimmed hat or baseball cap with a pair of toddler shades. Ensure that you look for glasses that are unbreakable, have scratch-proof lenses and block at least 99 percent of UVA and UVB rays. You could also consider a kid-sized sports band to keep her shades in place as she gallops, jumps, hops, skips.
