Don’t Talk About Race To Your Kids: No Black Or White

  • Link Copied

Don’t talk about race to your kids: I’m reminded of Michael Jackson’s song “Black or White”, when I saw met an Asian child, whose family has moved to our neighborhood off late. She referred to an Afro-American teen as “that brown guy” and that was really shocking. I know how tough it’s to bring up the topic of racism to the kids under 5. How to educate children on racism? We know that they don’t mean it, when they say “I don’t like his brown skin!” Still, it’s good to be vigilant about not to make any racist comments.

“Open-up about racism”

We know that we love them for who they’re. Look into their eyes and say it, “You’re fabulous; you’re great as who you’re!”

“But, If

You're Thinkin'

About My Baby

It Don't Matter If You're

Black Or White”

This is how children start loving their mate’s personality.

“Grasp the moments to teach them ”

Why don’t we start with eggs? Let’s gather some brown and white eggs.

When we crack open each egg, we should state it, “Look, the shell looks different. But, the inside is the same. This is how your friends are. They look white, brown, black, pale, thin, fat or short, but they are the same inside as you.”

“Admit that your child is influenced by your prejudiced remarks”

If our children keep making some prejudiced racist remarks, it means that they’re influenced by us or a foreign source. Just swallow your wrath and keep asking them open-ended questions, “What made you say that?”, “Did someone say that?”, “who said that?”

So, we should admit our prejudice and get rid of it.

Also it’s such a sadness to see Indian parents associating their children’s skin tone to their ancestry. Even if they don’t mean it, they’re sowing the seeds of racism that keeps reflecting in them, when they grow up…
