Dealing with an Elderly person with dementia

Some of the elderly people are always icky. They hate even the company of their grand children. It’s a task to find out what frustrates them. Even bathing frustrates them; especially if there’s a toddler at home? Life is a living hell to them and for the people around them.

Aggressive Old man: “I don’t care about taking a shower!”

Do: Just be earnest to analyze what annoys them. There’s always something that puts them down at times. Let them vent out for a while!

Don’t: Never ever try rubbing their palm or try any of your problem solving skills – a motivational speech that’s intended to help him stay calm.

Confused old woman: “Why aren’t we leaving? This isn’t my home!”

Do: Always carry your tablet holding some nostalgic pictures. Remind her that she belongs right there. Pictures speak better than words. Her memory keeps walking back and forth every time she wakes up.

Don’t: any such risks as logical explanations. In that case you’re digging your own grave!

Let me “cheerio” with some more dementia care in part 2.
