Bonding with your baby
Bonding with your baby is rewarding to both you and the baby; it is an emotional connection that is as necessary as the air the baby breathes and the milk he/she drinks. The newborn feels safe and loved and the parent enjoys a rush of oxytocin, the 'happy chemical' that's released in the brain after the process.
Bonding is not only motivation for but also the result of connecting with our children; the more attuned you are you can be more effective in responding sensitively to your baby’s needs. The process of bonding could take few days or weeks and are formed in various ways.
Ways to build that special bond with your baby:
a) Narrate all things during the day: This helps not only to jump-start language development, but also makes the baby feel secure. You could tell him/her about the weather, some happy news or anything while changing the diaper or spending time with him/her. Your happy and calm voice would inspire the baby to build a strong bond.
b) Share a hobby: It could be anything like reading, working in the garden or drawing; explain what you are doing as you engage in the hobby. You could place your baby on your lap while reading or in a nearby spot while working. He/she will look forward to joining you each time.
c) Sing a song: Just look into your baby’s eyes and start singing any song; you do not necessarily require the right pitch or lyrics. He/she will not only enjoy the attention, but would also get excited at the sound of your tune. You too would love having an enthusiastic audience for your singing.
d) Sway to music: Bonding takes place because even dancing is a form of communication, a gestural language of sorts; you need not be a professional dancer. Dancing with the baby also provides a chance for extra cuddles throughout the day.
e) Strike a yoga pose: Practicing yoga with your baby not only strengthens the bond, but also tones the core, arms and legs. Let your baby be in a spot nearby when you stretch and describe each movement to him/her. After you have finished you could stretch out your little one's limbs, reach her/his arms above her head, gently bend and extend her legs and help her roll over from her stomach to her back.
f) Try a baby massage:Follow up yoga with a baby massage by gently rub him/her all over and talk to him/her about one’s arms, legs, tummy, shoulders and other parts as you touch each of them. An infant massage is a great way of bonding with your baby and he/she will love the touch, eye contact and the sound of your voice.
As a conclusive note bonding with the baby does not take place when you are tired or overwhelmed; relax by taking a walk, reading a book or soaking in the tub while other family members help. You will then be better prepared to care for the baby and he/she will show how much one missed you. No parent is ever completely responsive and 100 percent attuned; this undeniably special bond with your baby strengthens as you spend special time with your little one.
