Ask A Prospective Child Care Provider 7 Top Questions

  • Link Copied

I am sure you have looked into the licensing requirements and any accreditation preferences while selecting a childcare provider for your child; however there are some more key questions you should ask and consider before you make this important decision.

7 Questions to ask before choosing a prospective child care provider:

1. What is the policy regarding sick kids?

Most working parents have the additional stress of determining what they should do when their child is sick; different centers have varying policies, and it is best to ask the particular center. Know if they send kids home with any sort of sniffle or is fever a requirement for being sent home; also find out what care options exist when a child care provider becomes ill.

2. Do you have a sick care option?

Working parents would find a childcare provider that has a "sick care" option for mildly ill children as a job-saver. A child with a strep throat would not be allowed at many facilities and at school, but once antibiotics have kicked in, rest and relaxation, combined with isolation from other kids may be all a child really needs, with this facility being offered at an extra charge in some centers.

3. Do I have to pay for days when my child is absent due to illness or vacation?

In many cases the answer is “Yes” as the center’s overhead charges continue though some facilities offer a break if a child has an extended illness and others offer a certain number of days as credit to be used toward vacation, illness, or other type of absence.

4. What is your discipline policy?

It is best that you understand the disciplinary approach and be comfortable with it. Not only do you want to find out what they do, but you also want to clearly understand what type of practices is prohibited. You could ask to meet the center’s director or have a one-on-one with a provider in case of particular concerns.

5. What types of meals and snacks do you serve?

Parents and providers may have different notions on what is a nutritionally balanced and suitable meal or snack. Any food sensitivities must be stated and clearly understood; also their stance occasional treats, junk food, and food preparation.

6. What is your staff turnover rate?

The staff turnover in childcare centers is pretty high and it is very important to know the frequency of staff changes affects your child's comfort and sense of security, with a high turnover signaling a serious problem in the center's operation.

7. Do you charge extra if I'm late picking my child up?

The penalty in case of some childcare centers is high as the parents lateness prevents staff from going home and on to their planned activities. Some facilities may even have firm rules for tardy parents in which they can choose to cease care.

These are but some of the important questions you as a parent could ask a childcare provider and then decide on a particular provider.
