Permissive parenting can also be called indulgent parenting. A permissive parent is not demanding of the kids and is very lenient. He/she fails to set expectations from their children and easily give in when they want something.

Tell me some more about permissive parenting?

Permissive parents are viewed more as friends to their children as they are warm and responsive.

They may fail to build healthy eating habits in their children and may buy their children anything just to keep them happy and calm.

Get kids what they want

Children raised in a permissive home do not face consequences for negative behavior and tend to watch TV for more than the two hours; the limit recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Why does permissive parenting not work?

It may be difficult for some to enforce rules, but structure is very important.

Children of permissive parents have decreased activity levels and have a higher risk of being an alcoholic when they are older.

Since no limits are set at home, these kids are unable to regulate their own emotions, and so they become out of control and very demanding.

Children in permissive homes may become more impulsive or less able to control their behavior and deal with limits.

Though we always negotiate, it is best understood that certain things in a child’s life is non-negotiable; this is very necessary for him/her to be a good and healthy member of society and have to follow the rules to a degree.

How to adopt a good system of parenting?

According to experts, it is bad to have overly indulgent parents and spoilt kids, though some common practices of the permissive parenting style might be well worth adopting.

Provide age appropriate choices for kids like allowing them to wear to school what they want and what to cook for dinner.

Next be warm and responsive and give your kids attention and listen to them.

Parents can remain flexible and decide what they will or will not let go off.

You could start out being authoritative with your children when they're younger and give them more freedom as they age. You could probably allow the kids especially young teens to hang out at the pool by themselves during vacations. By first putting in hard work you can reap the benefit of trust later.

Do most parents belong to either follow permissive or authoritarian parenting ? What is the best parenting?

Most parents do not fall in one category of parenting. Flexibility is very important and you are the best judge as you know your child best and what technique is called for in a specific situation.

Permissive and authoritarian parentings are two points between which a pendulum swings; a good parent usually picks the middle of the road route.
