Most mothers love parenting; however all of us as mothers experience the need to have some times for ourselves or to spend some time out with our spouse. This is a very genuine need; this need brings with it the task of hiring a good babysitter, who can be really trusted with our young children.

My friend Rama and I were discussing steps to engage a good baby sitter when we suddenly realized that the first and best way to find a baby sitter for our children was to ask friends and family; we could get many recommendations based on their own experience with various baby sitters and of teenage help from the extended family. It is always best to get a few numbers that you could contact; as good baby sitters always had a good market and it was always best to have a backup.

Next it was good to be smart in selecting a baby sitter; it is important to sit down and chat with her. My experience shows that it is not very necessary to employ a professional baby sitter; it is more necessary to employ one that you would find comfortable to leave your child or children.  They should be real fun for your children and be enthusiastic and happy to be with them. I have always looked forward to engaging Lucy to look after my children; she was so much fun and enthusiastically engaged my children that they always looked forward to my outings and being with her.

I have always believed that once I engage a baby sitter, it is my duty to find time to show her around the house as well as give her all information about the child/children; small details as what they eat and when, time they go to bed, when they are allowed to view the TV and the shows that are prohibited for viewing. I have also considered it absolutely necessary to leave with them emergency numbers like doctor, my spouses, mine, friends and family that stay close by.

Here are a few indicators to give brownie points to your baby sitter:

  • A strong indicator that your baby sitter has done a good job is that your child is in a good mood and feels rested when you come back.

  • Give brownie points to your baby sitter if your baby is neat and clean when you come back home. This shows that her job is well done.

  • A good baby sitter would give you a run-down of activities she did with the child during your absence; the snacks she gave the child, the games she played and the time she put your child to bed.

  • Give the baby sitter some extra brownie points if the house is as neat and tidy as you left it; she needs your appreciation for this job well done.

  • A dose of brownie points if your child is excited about the baby sitter coming back is thrilled and talks about it.
