You may be excited to adopt a cat from a breeder, pet store or an animal shelter; adopting a cat could act as a stress buster and lower your blood pressure. It is always best to consider various factors to find a cat that is just ideal for you.

Important points to be considered:

1) Ensure there are no restrictions regarding pets in the apartments or establishment where you live before taking a cat home.

2) Looks are deceptive; never judge a cat by its outer beauty, but by its inner beauty.

3) Never reject a cat that tries to scratch or bite you; you could be a first time cat-owner or it could mean the cat does not like to be handled. It could also mean that the cat is just playful.

4) Most cat breeds are similar in temperament and body form, but it is found that some cat breeds may be friendlier than others, with some displaying special behaviors as love for water. Most breeds may suit you or you could also go in for a cross-bred one.

5) Cats with medium, modestly fluffy coat or short hair, smooth glossy coat are ideal for most cat owners; grooming one with short hair is easy as they are self-grooming and just need to be brushed once in several days to avoid scattering of surplus shed and to check for parasites. Medium hair cats need to be brushed just periodically to keep it knot-free, while Persian cats with long fluffy flowing coats require daily grooming. Bald cats and those with short hair find it very difficult to bear the harsh winters.

6) Never force a cat to be held; even affectionate cats may not like it at times. Make your hand into a fist and extend it to the cat; if it butts your hand, it is a friendly gesture, while if it looks away or backs out it means it is not for meeting new people or is afraid of people. You have to get the cat used to people.

7) Adopt a healthy kitten or cat; check the eyes ears and nose to make sure it is bright, free of discharge and dark wax that smells. Also make sure the fur is clean and free of bugs and the armpit and belly are free of fleas. Make sure the bottom does not have any signs of worms or diarrhea and there are no signs of diarrhea in the cage or litter box. Ensure that the breathing is clear.

8) Last but most important make sure you can afford a pet cat; feeding, caring, vet visits could cost quite a lot even if you have medical insurance for your pet.
