8 Important Things You Should Know About Macaws

Macaws are beautiful, noisy and vivid birds with large beaks; they elicit varying degree of curiosity by their flashiness and nature. Here are some important things you should know about macaws.

8 important things about macaws:

1) Macaws present behavioral problems less frequently than other pet birds; generally having a stable temperament, this parrot specie is less inclined to display neurotic behaviors as compared to other species. This parrot specie does not over-react to unfamiliar objects or perceived dangers; this quality increases their ability to focus on what is being taught to them to alter their behavior within a short period of time.

2) Macaws possess big beaks, but most of them would not engage in destructive chewing of expensive furniture and other unacceptable things as compared with cockatoos and unruly hyacinths. Most macaws can be taught simple behavioral rules and provided a wood to chew on; confining their chewing to only acceptable objects and toys.

3) Most macaws do not need to be cuddled often or stared lovingly in the eyes. They are able to entertain themselves even when no one is around; this quality makes them very lovable companions. When they turn demanding, their behavior could be corrected by being worked upon.

4) Macaws can be extremely noisy; this could also be the result of a noisy home environment. It is common for macaws to raise their voice to meet the decibel level of their environment. However they can learn to tone down their vocalization and be quiet most of the time in quiet households to please their owners.

5) Most mature macaws that live in households exhibit less sexually differentiated behavior than other species like Amazon parrots and cockatoos. You would find both males as well as female mature macaws being less patient and noisy, with females especially scarlet macaws turning  hormonal and nesting in cage irrespective of whether a male is available or not.

6) Macaws feel that they are one of the gang in human and animal families, eagerly fitting into their lifestyle and activities. Being easy to live with and flexible, they could be spoiled and could squawk or bite for anger and attention. But their behavior could be changed quickly with appropriate training.

7) Macaws during adolescence like to test their limits and abilities by squawking and some biting. On understanding that this behavior is undesirable they become calm and enjoy being a part of the family. Macaws like Hyacinths could become rowdy and strong willed during adolescence and bully animals and people around them. When you work appropriately on their behavior they soon become enjoyable, affectionate and beloved family members.

8) Most large macaws need a safe place on the floor that is free from injury by other inhabitants as well as bacterial contamination traces from outside sources because macaws enjoy padding around on the floor at all stages of life.
