Selecting a good nanny that is experienced, cares for the safety of your child and has some knowledge of early childhood development is not enough; you need to look out for the signs in a good nanny.

The 7 important signs are:

1)    I have always loved Mary, the nanny of my children; she always made sure she arrived at the right time. She informed us when she was unwell or had some urgent task to attend to; she also arranged for substitute help. She was a good, reliable, considerate nanny, who respected the terms of the contract.

2)    “My kids rejoice when they see her”, said my friend Usha about the nanny of her children; when your kids look forward to being with her, you can rest assured that you have engaged a good warm, caring and patient nanny.  Your kids would love to talk non-stop about the wonderful things she does and says; she is more than a caretaker, as she loves being in the company of your kids.

3)    A good nanny works not only on creative solutions, but collaborates with you; she takes her job of providing the best care to your child seriously.  When your child runs out of paint, she will find some household supplies your child can use for an art and when your child find it difficult to sleep, she will take your advice and help.

 A smart nanny

4)    A good nanny renders excellent health and cleanliness care; she will not only keep your child’s room and child neat and clean, but she will practice good hygiene in everything pertaining to the child and has his/her welfare in mind.

5)    I would appreciate a nanny that makes an effort to stay connected; a good nanny is serious about her job of keeping the parent well informed about the daily activities of the child either by writing notes, filling daily reports or by setting aside some time to catch up on such information with the parent.

Nanny listening patiently to child

6)    A good nanny is just like a good parent that listens patiently and empathically to all that the child tells her; she will not only listen to the new things a child has learnt, but also cherishes a child’s curiosity, tries to answer questions, illicit imaginary responses and think of creative ways to teach a child new skills.

7)    A good nanny would make safety a priority with the child, both at home as well as outside; accidents are infrequent with her making it a point to hold the child’s hand while crossing the street, keeping the safety gate to the kitchen closed and keeping a close watch when he/she is in the backyard. If she does drive the child, she makes sure she buckles up the child in the car seat.
