5 Tips To Deal With Difficult Aging Parents
Our parents looked after us as children; however it may becomes difficult to look after them in old age; as my friend very clearly put it that her aging parents are driving her nuts. With my years of care giving I have come to the conclusion that it becomes very difficult to look after parents whether we do it out of duty or lovingly especially if our parents are difficult and demanding.
Here are a few tips to look after difficult aging parents:
1) We have to learn to put ourselves first at times; it is necessary to consider seriously what is good for ourselves, our families and our peace of mind. It would be futile to sacrifice our sanity just for the sake of care giving; we have to find ways to delegate this job to others if we find the burden of care giving weighing you down.
2) Caring for aging parents can become very time-consuming and emotionally wrenching as we watch our loved ones decline in health; we need to know our limitation and know when to say, “No”. All of us have our limitations and it is good to admit this to ourselves.
3) As a third tip never expect praise, appreciation or recognition from an aged parent especially one that has dementia. Their cognitive impairment may be the reason for it when the aged parent may have behavior changes, such as suspicion, accusations and nasty outbursts. So we should just do a good job for our own sake and because it’s right and not care for having our parent’s approval.
4) A fourth tip would be to love ourselves and appreciate our efforts for trying and believe that we would not always be successful. We may doubt ourselves or feel guilty, but we should keep up our efforts to make life manageable, keep up their quality of life as best as we can with a sincere heart. We need to boost up our morals by considering ourselves brave and valued from within for forging on in the face of difficulty.
5) Fifthly we need to take breaks in between care giving, directing others, managing our own jobs, families and problems; this is very essential to nurture our own bodies and soothe our own spirits to gives us the strength to carry on and keep it up.
Hope you are able to care give difficult parents. I wish you all success in your journey.
