Hope you have read my previous blog about behavioral problems in Dogs at 5 Main behavioral problems of Pet Dogs. Here are a few more problems that you must be aware of while owning a Pet Dog.

Biting, chewing, barking, digging and chasing are some of the important behavioral problems of dogs, but dogs could have other behavioral problems like begging, separation anxiety, inappropriate urination and defecation, jumping up and aggression.

Discussing the 5 more behavioral problems of dogs:

1) Many dog owners encourage the bad habit begging in pet dogs; it could lead to digestive problems and obesity. It is best to believe that scraps from the table are neither treats nor love. Begging can be curtailed by asking your dog to sit down far from where he can stare at you; confining him to another room would also help. You could give him a special treat if he behaves after the family is done with the meal.

2) The next common behavioral problem of dogs is separation anxiety; it shows up in various ways like chewing, inappropriate urination and defecation, vocalization, and other forms of destruction when dog is separated from the owner. It is significant to understand that your dog would also show other signs like being anxious when the owner prepares to leave, misbehavior for some time after the owner leaves, following the owner constantly and trying to touch the owner whenever possible.  True separation anxiety is remedied with behavior modification, dedicated training, and desensitization exercises; medication is recommended as a last resort.

Inappropriate urination in dogs

3) Inappropriate urination and defecation is the behavioral problem of frustrated dogs; they not only damage parts of your home, but also make themselves unwelcome to public places and other’s homes. A veterinarian would be the best to rule out any other health problems before you look for other reasons; they could be submission or excitement urination, anxiety, lack of proper house breaking, to seek attention or territorial marking. Inappropriate urination and defecation is unavoidable in puppies up to the age of 12 weeks; older dogs require serious behavioral modification.

4) Jumping up is another behavioral problem especially in older dogs that do it to exert their dominance; this behavior is normal in puppies when they want to greet and reach out to others greet and reach out to others. In older dogs it may work to lift a knee, grab the paws or push the dog; but not necessarily in dog that seek attention. It would then help to turn and walk away avoiding eye contact. The dog will soon calm down; you could reward him to convey the message that jumping up is wrong.

5) Growling, biting, snarling, showing the teeth and lunging are signs of dog aggression; this could be due to the genes of the dog or due to other reasons of why the dog bites or snaps. The vet would be the best to find out why your dog is aggressive; it could also help to engage an experienced dog trainer and take steps to keep others safe from the dog.
