5 Important Reasons A Cockatoo Screams
Cockatoos are one of the most favored pet birds because they are not only extremely attractive, loving, intelligent, inquisitive and social, but they also possess striking talking abilities. Cockatoos scream a lot; knowing the reason why a cockatoo screams can help us bring their screams under tolerable limits.
The 5 important reasons a cockatoo screams are:
1) Most parrots, especially cockatoos scream out of natural instinct both early in the morning and late in the evening to announce their presence. You could control and time this raucous noise with some kind of music; as your pet cockatoo starts screaming turn on his favorite festive music and let the cockatoo express himself, following it up by some softer and calmer music, indicating to the pet bird to calm down and be quiet.
2) Next these intelligent birds scream to express themselves when they are happy or excited; you would however find that these screams of joy and excitement are not straight out, but have a sing-song rhythm. You would also find the pet cockatoo bobbing up and down, flapping its feather and moving in a way that indicates it is happy. It is very difficult to stop the sing song rhythm screams of a cockatoo that resembles laughing; it is best to accept and try to enjoy his happiness.
3) Your pet cockatoo is an incredibly social bird enjoying constant contact with its flock whether human or avian; when lonely it could suffer from separation anxiety like humans. He could scream for someone in the family to come immediately, with this being a nuisance for neighbors. It would help to leave the radio or television on; in case of longer hours it may help to get him a companion or send him to bird day care.
4) Your pet cockatoo could also scream for extra attention when you are in the same room or nearby in the house; if you are not spending adequate time with him, consider giving him more time or else find ways to control the screaming. Give him a bell to ring or ask him to utter a phrase when he wants your attention; in addition make sure you not only give him adequate attention, but also a lot of exercise to curb the tendency of excessive screaming.
5) A cockatoo could also scream to indicate a stranger coming around the house; these distressing and anxious alarm screams could also be false and indicate kids running through the house, a cat in the yard or even a plastic bag blowing down the street. If your pet cockatoo is constantly screaming for non-existent dangers, it would help if you place his cage away from windows and doors, preferably in a place he can interact with the family. You could teach him by a word or phrase that means everything is fine and the alarm should not be sounded.
